OBPDC 2026 marks the 10th edition of the On-Board Payload Data Compression Workshop
Co-organised by ESA and CNES, with the support of Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), OBPDC continues a long-standing tradition of bringing together experts from space agencies, industry, and academia to exchange ideas and experience on on-board data compression, reduction, and processing.Barcelona, Spain · 12–14 October 2026

Since its first edition, OBPDC has provided a unique and focused forum dedicated to on-board payload data compression and processing for space missions.
Over the years, the workshop has accompanied the evolution of the field — from classical compression techniques to increasingly sophisticated on-board processing, content awareness, and AI-based approaches — while maintaining a strong emphasis on mission realism and implementation constraints.
The 10th edition of OBPDC represents an important milestone for the community: an opportunity not only to present the latest developments, but also to reflect on lessons learned and discuss future directions for on-board data systems in upcoming missions.
Over ten editions, OBPDC has become a reference workshop for the on-board payload data compression community.
As space missions continue to generate increasing volumes of data — driven by higher-resolution instruments, growing constellations, and higher acquisition rates — OBPDC provides a focused environment to discuss practical and forward-looking solutions for on-board data reduction and processing, grounded in mission needs and system constraints.
OBPDC is a focused technical workshop for professionals involved in the design, development, and use of on‑board data processing technologies for space missions.
The workshop is particularly relevant for:
· Mission and system engineers
· Payload and instrument designers
· Algorithm and software developers
· ASIC / FPGA and on‑board computing specialists
· Researchers and academics working on compression, AI, and data reduction
OBPDC encourages the exchange of experience across space agencies, industry, and academia, with a strong emphasis on practical solutions and mission realism.
From on-board data compression to on-board data analysis and intelligence, OBPDC brings together the community shaping the future of on-board data processing technologies, supporting the next generation of data-intensive space missions.
