The European Space Agency (ESA) was delighted to organise the 6th edition of the “Workshop on the EU REACH Regulation and its Impact on the Space Sector” on Tuesday, 17 June 2025, at ESA ESTEC in Noordwijk, The Netherlands.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all participants—both on-site and online—for contributing to a successful and insightful event.
At this engaging full-day event we were pleased to host over 130 registered attendees from 24 countries across four continents, including experts from EU regulatory bodies, industry, space agencies, SMEs, NGOs, and research communities.
The workshop featured outstanding presentations and dynamic discussions covering: - The current state of EU REACH regulation, upcoming amendments (including PFAS and Cr(VI) initiatives), and EU REACH revision, - Updates on authorisation and restriction from ECHA and perspectives on defence-related chemical regulation from the European Defence Agency. - Industrial views, space-sector challenges, and use‑case mapping for PFAS, presented by REACH experts and representatives of major integrators and SMEs. - Sharing of international insights, including JAXA's strategies for PFAS obsolescence in their supply chain. - The launch and practical use of the ESA REACH Tool to monitor regulatory risk and PFAS use across projects. - An interactive brainstorming session and an engaging panel discussion that spurred lively debate on future EU chemicals policy and group restriction proposals.
