Use of High-Performance COTS Processors for Institutional Missions: Risks, Challenges and Possibilities
In the last years, there has been a tremendous increase in the use of COTS devices in space due to the need to increase processing capabilities, reduce power consumption and save costs in New Space applications. High-performance COTS processors, SoCs, and FPGAs are no exception, enabling use of cutting-edge processing technology in New Space applications not available for institutional missions. Usage of high-performance components adds not only better computational performance than their space-qualified counter-parts, but also adds flexibility and the chance to change algorithms in-flight.
Meanwhile, traditional institutional missions are lagging behind due to the need for qualified components and software. In this roundtable, the panel will explore how the use of high-performance COTS components could be used to improve various aspects of institutional missions -- and possibly enable new mission operational modes using advanced algorithms. Challenges and risks will also be explored.
