Plenary Speakers

Dr. Ferran Gascon, ESA

Title: Copernicus Sentinel-2 On-Board Data Compression

Description: This talk will include a description of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 on-board data compression system and the operational experience of using it.

Bio: Born in Girona, Spain, Ferran Gascon has been at ESA since 2002. In 1998 he received his Master's Degree in Telecommunications Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. He later spent three years at the Centre d'Études Spatiales de la Biosphère and obtained his PhD in remote sensing from the University of Toulouse III.

In 2002, he was recruited as Research Fellow at ESTEC, ESA's research and technology centre in the Netherlands. His research focused on the retrieval of biophysical variables using optical imaging sensors. In 2004, he joined ESA's Directorate of Technical and Quality Management to work on the development of the Sentinel-2 mission for aspects related to data processing, calibration and validation.

In 2009, he moved to ESRIN, ESA's centre in Italy. Here he spent some years on the development and operations of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 and FLEX missions as a Data Quality Manager. The scope of the tasks covered all mission aspects related to products/algorithms definition, calibration, and validation. He is currently the Copernicus Sentinel-2 Mission Manager.

Prof. Enrico Magli, Politecnico of Torino

Title: Deep learning for satellite image processing: where are we going?

Description: Artificial intelligence is playing a growing role in satellite image processing and in the remote sensing market, as deep learning methods are improving the performance of many processing and inference tasks. This talk will overview recent advances in the field, covering tasks related to image generation (e.g., image denoising/despeckling and super-resolution) as well as image classification, event prediction and compressive imaging. It will also discuss key aspects in the application of deep learning to onboard satellite image processing.

Bio: Enrico Magli is a Full Professor at Politecnico di Torino, where he leads a research group active in the field of image and video coding and analysis, compressed sensing and security. He is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology, and the EURASIP Journal on Image and Video Processing, and a former Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Multimedia. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and has been an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer for 2015-2016. He is a co-recipient of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society 2011 Transactions Prize Paper Award. He has been general chair of IEEE ICME 2015 and IEEE MMSP 2013, and TPC chair / area chair for several conferences. He has published over 250 scientific papers and filed 8 patents. He is co-founder and President of the ToothPic start-up.
