ESA Workshop
The Business of Light: Scaling up Optical Ground Stations deployment and operation.
The evolution of free-space optical communications has reached a pivotal juncture. As the space sector transitions toward high-density LEO constellations and high-throughput feeder links, the inherent capacity limits of the traditional radio-frequency spectrum are becoming more apparent. Consequently, optical ground stations are evolving from specialized research infrastructure into pivotal components of the global telecommunications network.
The workshop will assemble key stakeholders to examine the evolving economic landscape of the optical ground segment as it seeks to establish a sustainable commercial footing. While the technical advantages of laser communications—such as high data rates and license-free operation—are well-documented, the path to a sustainable business model requires a balance between technological reliability and market demand. The discussion will focus on the operational and strategic shifts necessary to achieve a "break-even" point in a sector impacted by fluctuating atmospheric conditions and facing the complexities of global network integration.
